Six-time Olympic medalist Clara Hughes told her personal story of depression at the Breakfast of Champions at the London Convention Centre Tuesday morning.
The speed skater and cyclist says she is determined to break down the walls of stigma surrounding mental illness.
“Making my experience with depression public knowledge made me realize this sharing is perhaps more important than any of the medals I won,” says Hughes.
The 7th annual Breakfast of Champions was put on by St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation and the Canadian Mental Health Association, London-Middlesex. Its purpose is to build awareness about mental health and raise money to support vital programs in the community.
The event also featured the Champion of Mental Health Awards, which honours a local individual and organization for contributions to mental health care delivery or promotion.
